The 2020 ALABAMA B.A.S.S. NATION COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP on Lake Eufaula
By Eddie Plemons
The 2020 ALABAMA B.A.S.S. NATION COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP on Lake Eufaula started out on a cold Saturday morning that evolved into a misty, even colder day. Water temperatures were reported to be 51 to 53 degrees with semi muddy Chattahoochee river with some creeks even muddier. Needless to say, the weather would make fishing tough and miserable for the college anglers, but like always, someone will catch them.
The University of Montevallo team of Jarrett Brown and Tyler Harless came to the scales with one of the biggest bags of bass I’ve seen in a long time. Anchored by the big fish of the tournament, an eight pound even, lunker, their total weight was an amazing 29.98 lbs. Understandably so, with more tournaments coming up on Eufaula, they were very secretive about how and where they caught their almost six pound average bag. All that I was able to drag out of them was that they were using a big worm on a led head in 18 foot of water. They would not specify if it was a point or ledge or even the color, type or manufacturer of the worm. For their first-place finish Jarrett and Tyler will represent The University of Montevallo and ALABAMA B.A.S.S. NATION in The B.A.S.S. COLLEGIATE CHAMPIONSHIP this summer.
The second place Auburn Univeristy Team of John Pirani and Peyton Nash started their morning with a bang! They were able to put a four pound plus , followed by a five pounder in the live well at their first stop that morning. They worried because they had only one other keeper fish in the live well at noon. Shortly after noon the two began to catch fish and and sat on that spot culling until weigh in time. They focused on creek channel swings mid way up creeks , using 5XD crankbaits to bring in 17.48lbs.
J.T Russell and Grayson Morris of The University of Montevallo started their morning right outside Lake Point landing throwing Strike King 1.5, sexy Shad crank bait. They were able to land two bass off the riprap early. The Montevallo anglers then moved to another creek and began punching the grass with a black and blue Sweet Beaver. They caught five more bass, all after 1:30 PM, and made it to their 2:20PM weigh in with a weight of 17.16lbs.
All and all this turned out to be a great event with ten different colleges and Universities participating from all over the State of ALABAMA.
