Glasgow returns from absence, wins Eufaula qualifier

Allan Glasgow has a lengthy history fishing tournaments on Lake Eufaula.
Dating back to the 80s, Glasgow has competed at various levels and on various circuits. Until recently, he had been noticeably absent from Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation (ABN) competition. With the opportunity to share the boat with his daughter Emily under the current ABN team format, Glasgow made the decision to fish the qualifiers this year, and his presence was very much felt Saturday (April 17) in the third ABN event of 2021.
Glasgow brought in a five-fish limit of Eufaula largemouth that weighed 19.63 to top a field of 89 boaters, edging out second-place finisher Ed Payne. Payne (Winfield Bassmasters) caught a haul that weighed 19.20 for second, and Ryan Sweeney (Birmingham Bass Club) finished third with 17.97.
On the co-angler side, Aaron Cherry (Headland Bass Team/University of Montevallo) put together a dominating performance with 13.75. His three-fish limit easily topped the field of 70. Cherry, who won the 2018 ABN co-angler Alabama State Championship on Eufaula, paired with Peyton McCord to claim the Team Competition. They combined for a 28.85 total.
Academy Sports + Outdoors Big Fish honors went to Kyle Dorsett (Coosa River Anglers) with a 6.90 largemouth.
“We had a great day,” Glasgow said. “We had a good practice yesterday, spent the day looking around, seeing what was going on, and found some shad spawning in a couple of places that we thought we could go back to today and catch some. We didn’t know if we were going to catch that size of fish for sure, but when they started generating water, we started catching our fish.”
Glasgow (Lake Tuscaloosa Bassmasters) said the current started moving about 8 a.m., and the change in conditions ignited a swim jig bite. Earlier he had landed a 5.35 largemouth, but his biggest catch came later in the morning. It weighed 5.69.
“We started on a place and it just wasn’t right, so we went to a back-up spot and caught the 5.35,” Glasgow said. “We stayed on the river most of the day. “We caught everything out on the river except for the biggest fish. I caught it in the back of a pocket.
“It was a great day. It’s always fun to fish with my daughter.”
Glasgow, from Ashville, used a white Dirty Jigs swim jig trailed by a Zoom Ultravibe Speed Craw to catch his fish.
“I really enjoy fishing here,” Glasgow said. “It’s a little different now with all the offshore fishing. I’m a bank beater.”
“It’s my first year back (to ABN tournaments) in about 10 years, so it’s been a while. The way it works out with the co-angler situation, I wanted to come back and fish some with my daughter.”
Finishing second, Payne took a slightly different approach although he caught all of his fish in grass. Payne punched a Z-Man creature bait with a 1 ½-oz. weight, working grass over four to five feet of water in the back of creeks.
Payne, who acknowledged he hasn’t had great luck on Eufaula, said he “went north” to find his fish, including a 6.76 largemouth.
“Anywhere that was matted up,” Payne said. “There was just one back in there in each one of them. I hit enough of them to catch everything I had.”
“Any place that had a little creek channel running into it was where they were at.”
In the co-angler competition, Cherry continued his run of success on Eufaula although he said he has only fished the lake twice in 2021.
The day started off slow for Cherry. In fact, he didn’t boat a keeper until about 12:30 but got over the early lull in a big way.
“We went shallow, and I finally caught one on a frog,” he said.
He and McCord (Headland Bass Team), who finished eighth among boaters with 15.10, moved back to some offshore brushpiles, and Cherry caught another good fish on a Texas-rigged worm. Returning shallow, he finished off the big limit with another frog fish.
“Peyton kept saying, ‘I need a big one. I need a big one’,” Aaron said. “He had thrown up there two or three times, and then I threw in the same spot, and the big fish hit the frog when it hit the water.”
Finishing second among co-anglers was David Noakes (River City Anglers) with 10.64. Noakes was also the top competitor entered in Fishin’ 4 A Cure, the program supported by the ABN that raises funds to combat childhood diseases.
Rounding out the top 10 among boaters were Shane Powell (Wiregrass Bassmasters, 17.73); Timothy Hatcher (Wiregrass Bassmasters, 17.13); Kyle Glasgow (Winfield Bassmasters, 15.41); Tony Hogan (New Line Bass Club, 15.12); McCord (15.10); Dorsett (14.87); and Greg Tucker (Eufaula Head Hunters,14.66).
After Cherry and Noakes in the co-angler competition were Matthew Daniel (Wiregrass Bassmasters, 9.11); Will Dickerson (Wallace State CC Bass Club, 8.89); Alex Roberts (Birmingham Bass Club, 7.81); Clay Nicholson (Wiregrass Bassmasters, 7.51); Luke Glasgow (Winfield Bassmasters, 7.02); Jimmy Thornhill (Wiregrass Bassmasters, 7.01); Chris Marler (Shotgun Sports Supply, 6.88); and Donny Davis (Belgreen Bass Club, 6.82).
The top 7 teams not previously qualified earned a spot in the state team championship on Lake Martin in November, when pairs of ABN anglers compete for entry in the B.A.S.S. Nation Team Championship scheduled for Eufaula in December.
After Cherry and McCord, other teams qualifying were Hatcher and Chandler Teems; Kyle Glasgow and Luke Glasgow; Allan Glasgow and Emily Glasgow; Payne and Burt Lancaster; Dusty Robinson and Nicholson; and David Pair and Noakes.
The Eufaula Barbour Chamber of Commerce served as host for the event, which was held at Lakepoint State Park. ABN sponsors for 2021 include Fish Life Fish Care Products, Academy Sports + Outdoors, Airport Marine, Office Partners, Halo Rods, Radicull Culling Devices, Davis Bait Co., George Paint and Body, Triton Boats, Mercury, Motor Guide, Lowrance, NetBait, Shell, Hammer Rods, Shelby County, StrikeZone Lure Co., Charlie’s BBQ, the Rod Glove, T-H Marine, Power-Pole, and Alabama Hosting.
Angler of the Year races continue to shape up with the boater competition headed toward a tight finish. After Eufaula, Brent Crow (Marathon Bassmasters), Allan Glasgow, and Robinson (Wiregrass Bassmasters) were all tied atop the standings with Keith Glasgow (Winfield Bassmasters) close behind.
In the co-angler AOY race, Dickerson took over the top spot with Richard White (Alex City Bassmasters) in second and Jonathan Barnette (Carbon Hill Bass Club) in third.
Individuals and teams have a final opportunity to qualify for the state tournament Nov. 5-6 on Martin. The ABN regular season ends next month on Lay Lake. That tournament takes place May 22 out of Beeswax Landing.
